A Feathered Farewell

That one blue egg represents a life time of hard work.

Henrietta.

Every 25 hours or so, a chicken delivers the goods, whether there’s a rooster by her side or not.

Henrietta was no slacker.

And the blue egg among the brown proved it.

Our beautiful white matriarch of the coop.

Ameraucana or Araucana ~ not sure which.

Perhaps she was a little of both.

We got her in the spring of 2001, as a give-a-way.

An old worn out hen from the Wolverine area.

She passed on earlier this month with no warning, no fanfare.

The previous day she had been out free-ranging for some tasty morsels with the gals and their protector, our beautiful rooster.

Although we have some new two-year olds in our flock, we will miss the ole’ gal.

And that single blue egg.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing and knowing,

Caprine Communication

Our new little goat, Rachael, is fitting right in.

Upon bringing her home, both Rustic Russ and I began “talking” to her as her mother would.

Low, reassuring Baaaaa sounds.

Being a surrogate goat Mama and Papa comes in handy.

We call and she comes a runnin’.

She wants that “motherly” reassurance.

And that “fatherly” approval.

The only time she isn’t responding back, is when her little mouth is full.

Thank goodness she likes leaves, and not berries.

Not yet anyway.

At the end of the day, she must return to the company of other ruminants.

It’s only right.

Until tomorrow ~ gotta love those goats ~ God willing,

Equine Eyes

I love watching our horses.

They are so…in the moment.

Always vigilant about their surroundings.

Even if it’s just to check out the new “kid” on the block.

Until tomorrow ~ Enjoying life today ~ God willing,

Life goes on…at Russ-Stick Acres

Hard to believe it was just a week ago.

Musher invasion at Russ-Stick Acres.

Here’s Jason Barron’s account.

After the event, Mother Nature decided to pay a visit and knock out my computer. Yes, Russ-Stick Acres is computer-less.

Dead. Fine’. Stick a fork in it ~ it’s done. End of story.

Hang in there folks, I will be back. Bigger, better, brighter.

As soon as we solve our computer crisis.

I’ve got so much to tell you. And show you.

New rabbits. New goat.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing,

I’m back folks. Rode hard and put away wet. But I’m back.

Stay tuned…

Until tomorrow ~ God willing and with His grace,

The Long Journey ~ is nearing an end…

Filed under: Meet the Mushers, Uncategorized — Tags: , , — Administrator @ 3:51 am

Tonight, as Rustic Russ and I made our usual trek to take in the simple beauty of our path-laden 40 acres (which tonight included fireflies lighting the way) we know our planning is coming to an end.

How wonderful to share the week with a full moon. According to the Lakota Sioux, the August full moon was named “Moon when cherries turn black”.

Since last fall, also during a full moon, we have been planning for our 2nd musher gathering.

Dee Dee Jonrowe, Ryan Redington and Jason Barron.

It’s like anything you do. You plan, you carry through, and if it is meant to be, it works out.

For us, we have to rely on faith, and the fortune of good friends.

We are usually a “party of two”.

But during our event planning, especially as the day draws nearer, we have the blessings of many hands.

We look forward to meeting new friends, and seeing old ones.

It is a time for like-minded folks to come together in fellowship, worship, and fun.

Sure, it’s tough at times.

Too much time on the ‘puter.

Too many boards being milled and nails being hammered into the early evening.

All the while we still do our own “work” and maintain our farm and sled dogs.

However, we are learning to roll with the punches.

Everything always works out.

As Rustic Russ always says, “It bees what it bees…”

We hope to see you this coming weekend, at Meet the Mushers. It’s truly life changing.

Until tomorrow ~ God willing,

Woodswoman
